Pupils from Lawthorn Primary School in North Ayrshire have made a dramatic reduction in the energy, water and resources their school uses. In this video, the pupils explain their top tips for tackling climate change by reducing the global footprint of their school.

Female Pupil 1: Hello and welcome to Lawthorn Primary School in Irvine. In our school we have been working hard to tackle climate change and we have made this video to share our ideas with you. 

Male Pupil 1: In Scotland and in the rest of the world, climate change is a big problem. The poorest countries are suffering the most although it is not their fault and we think this is not right.

Female Pupil 2: We want you to reduce your own global footprint - this is the effect to our planet using resources and energy.

Male Pupil 2: There are six things to consider when thinking about climate change. They are food, water, energy, waste, transport and buildings. Here are some of the things we have done in Lawthorn.


Male Pupil 3: Our school wasn’t built to be very energy efficient but that didn’t put us off, we tried our best and got everyone to help out.

Female Pupil 3: We have planted 180 trees to offset less carbon, we have planted a willow classroom and in the summer it will be green and leafy so we can go outside and have lessons in the shade.


Male Pupil 4: We have lots of computers in our school and things that use electricity but we’ve still managed to reduce energy we use by 43 per cent. We monitor our gas and electricity every week.  The primary sevens put them into graphs for the eco-board. 

Male Pupil 5: In every class there is an energy monitor and their job is to turn off the lights and keep the radiators low. 

Female Pupil 3: We use the online calculator on the Learning and Teaching Scotland website to measure the amount of carbon that we use. 


Male Pupil 6: Water is valuable and a lot of people around the world do not have clean water even though we have lots.

Male Pupil 7:  We put Hippo bags and censors into our toilets and after just one term we’ve saved enough water to fill four Olympic sized swimming pools.


Female Pupil 4: Did you know that food from school dinners can travel over 100,000 miles before it reaches your plate?

Female Pupil 5: Every class has a garden where they grow vegetables - we use these to make soup.

Male Pupil 8: We plant flowers and encourage wildlife that helps our apples to grow.

Female Pupil 6: Sometimes our crops fail because it is too dry or wet or hot, that helps us understand how farmers feel around the world when they are affected by climate change. 


Male Pupil 5: Before we had a travel plan most people came by car to school, now that’s reduced by 60 per cent. 

Male Pupil 9: We encourage parents to share cars and to use the park and stride. We also have a big shelter to encourage cyclist and walkers and also skates and scooters.

Male Pupil 10: We’ve worked out the safest routes to school and we’ve marked them using big footprints. We also organised competitions and prizes to encourage everyone to take the healthier way.


Female Pupil 7: The earth’s resources are precious so we have to look after them; we try our hardest to avoid waste. We can reduce our waste by 80 per cent. Our kitchens make 45 breakfast and 240 lunches nearly every day and sometimes more. We only produce 7 kilograms of waste and we hope to get this even lower.

Female Pupil 8: We have all been working hard to reduce our carbon footprints, it not only helps with climate change it is also a lot of fun and a great way of learning.  We hope you enjoyed our video, thank you.
