Interconnect 2.0 is a network dedicated to the needs of all local authorities within Scotland. Serving over 1 million users, Interconnect 2.0 provides high bandwidth communications between Scotland’s local authorities, Glow datacentres and national bodies such as Education Scotland, the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), Improvement Service (Scottish Government Customer First programme) and SEEMIS as well as to the rest of the world through links to the global Internet.
Interconnect 2.0 is managed by Education Scotland and delivered by THUS and JANET(UK). THUS provide the access connections to each of the connected organisations. Peering between THUS and JANET(UK) has been implemented at five locations across Scotland. Global Internet transit is delivered by JANET(UK). Where the existing infrastructure allowed access connections were provided on high capacity 1Gbps bearer circuits to enable the easy upgrade of bandwidth in the future. Where the infrastructure was not available to provide a high capacity 1Gbps bearer circuit the remaining mainland authority sites were connected at 100Mbps. As a result recent of infrastructure improvements these sites are currently being upgraded to 1Gbps bearer circuits. Capacity to the Island authorities is limited to 45Mbps radio connections.
