Glow is the world's first national intranet for education, developed exclusively for Scotland’s educational community. Breaking geographical and social barriers, Glow allows joined-up working the length and breadth of Scotland.

Preparation began by working with local authorities to check that Glow could automatically create the anticipated 800,000 accounts. Glow was then piloted over a number of stages, all of which introduced new components.

Feedback was then taken from 13 local authorities and 3000 users (made up of teachers, pupils and local authority staff) involved in the pilot. This feedback led to further improvements and the launch of Glow in full at the Scottish Learning Festival in 2007.

All 32 Scottish local authorities now use Glow as well as the 7 Teacher Education Institutes (Schools of Education), SQA and Education Scotland. The national Glow team work with these stakeholders to ensure Glow is tailored to the needs of each party.

The main purpose of Glow is to enhance the quality of learning and teaching in the classroom by fully supporting Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). It is proving to be an essential tool, and provides a platform for the educational community to build capacity and ensure a first-class education for Scotland. Using the national directory, Glow users can find others with similar areas of interest or expertise, collaborate across the country and make connections with others to improve learning and teaching.

As part of an ongoing refresh, we’ve been asking the education community to participate in a nationwide discussion about what improvements they would like to see. We’ve been listening, and as a result Glow has gone through a period of enhancement during 2010 based on user feedback. This will allow Glow to Glow brighter than ever before.
