Education against sectarianism

Challenging sectarianism and religious prejudice is an important aspect of ensuring equality and fairness within education.

Educational establishments can promote equality and fairness by:

  • ensuring structures and systems to build communities that promote respect, tolerance and understanding and eliminate prejudice, discrimination and harassment
  • ensuring equality of opportunity to all, irrespective of race, ethnicity, social origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability
  • educating and challenging sectarianism and religious prejudice
  • celebrating diversity of religion and belief.

It is important to challenge sectarianism and religious prejudice within the context of equality and fairness and not to focus on one aspect of equality to the exclusion of others. Equal opportunities should permeate the ethos of the educational centre and the centre should strive to raise the attainment and achievement of all its learners.

Schools have many strategies which can help challenge sectarianism and religious prejudice including:

  • anti-bullying
  • parental and community involvement
  • citizenship
  • inclusive education
  • human rights.
