Embedding More Choices, More Chances within Curriculum for Excellence

The Scottish Government’s More Choices, More Chances strategy (MCMC) is ensuring that learning and wider support systems deliver better outcomes for those young people at risk of moving into a negative destination after school. Providing the right choices and chances for all young people is central to Curriculum for Excellence.

Education Scotland held a series of three conferences which provided an opportunity for local authorities and their partners to consider the systems and structures needed to ensure the effective, sustainable delivery of young people’s entitlement to a coherent, inclusive Senior Phase.

There were presentations from Scottish Government, Education Scotland and local authorities. Presentations were followed by round table discussions to give delegates time to review and discuss the work of colleagues, reflect on local delivery and formulate strategies and plans to ensure that More Choices, More Chances and 16+ Learning Choices are fully embedded within Curriculum for Excellence.

Aims of the conferences

The conferences aimed to:

  • consider how local authorities and their partners are embedding More Choices, More Chances (with a focus on 16+ Learning Choices) in planning and service delivery to ensure that all young people receive the Senior Phase entitlements

  • review with partners the joint action required locally to deliver the Senior Phase entitlements

  • develop strategies and clear action for all partners to ensure the embedding of 16+Learning Choices within Senior Phase developments and long-term sustainable delivery.

Delegates included Local authority 16+Learning Choices Coordinators, MCMC leads, Curriculum for Excellence Leads, Curriculum for Excellence coordinators and Community Learning and Development Leads. Curriculum for Excellence College leads & Skills Development Scotland Area Managers were also represented.
