The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 and Code of Practice highlight that children and young people may require additional support for a variety of reasons. There are a range of approaches and supports which may be put in place to help overcome the barriers to learning that children and young people may face. The requirement for planning transitions is a key element to the Act and two projects based in North Lanarkshire aim to ensure that all the young people involved have appropriate transition plans as well as a curriculum which will meet their needs.

The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 (the Act) provides the legal framework which underpins the system for identifying and addressing the additional support needs of children and young people who face a barrier, or barriers, to learning. The Act aims to ensure that all children and young people are provided with the necessary support to help them work towards achieving their full potential. It also promotes collaborative working among all those supporting children and young people and sets out parents’ rights within the system.
