The Modelling flooding learning journey is for teaching about how mathematical modelling can help inform planning in engineering contexts.
In this journey, learners build up knowledge and skills through a curriculum focus on numeracy and mathematics. The lesson ideas allow them to see the purpose and relevance of applying mathematical modelling to solving problems relating to engineering contexts. Learners can then apply these skills in the interdisciplinary challenge where they develop a flood safety plan for a local authority.
There are rich opportunities in this learning journey to invite in partners and employers to give insights into how engineers use and apply numeracy and mathematics in their work.
This learning journey is also available in Word format to allow you to add to, adapt or change the resource and create your own learning journeys.

Mathematics > Number, money and measure > Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages > MNU 4-08a
Using proportion, I can calculate the change in one quantity caused by a change in a related quantity and solve real-life problems.
Mathematics > Number, money and measure > Patterns and relationships > MTH 4-13a
Having explored how real-life situations can be modelled by number patterns, I can establish a number sequence to represent a physical or pictorial pattern, determine a general formula to describe the sequence, then use it to make evaluations and solve related problems.

By considering the type of text I am creating, I can independently select ideas and relevant information for different purposes, and organise essential information or ideas and any supporting detail in a logical order. I can use suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with my audience.
