From fossil fuels to wind learning journey

The From fossil fuels to wind learning journey is for learning and teaching relating to the learning context of using renewable sources of energy to generate electricity.

A Scottish island, such as Eigg, and their quest to use only renewable energy to generate electricity could be used to contextualise the learning.

In this journey, learners build up knowledge and skills through a curriculum focus on sciences. The lesson ideas allow them to see the purpose and relevance of learning about energy conversion from both fossil fuels and wind power. Learners could then apply these skills to an engineering challenge relating to a scenario where islanders want to move to using technologies which harness renewable energy sources.

This learning context would provide rich opportunities for planning with other departments, such as technologies and geography, for interdisciplinary learning.

There are rich opportunities to work with partners in this journey by inviting in a STEM ambassador or someone from a local business to help learners gain insights into the world of work.

I am developing confidence when engaging with others within and beyond my place of learning. I can communicate in a clear, expressive way and I am learning to select and organise resources independently.
