Job Title: Principal Consultant

Describe what you do.

I work as an engineering/IT consultant. I advise companies on using clever, computer-based engineering devices for safety applications.

Such devices might measure pressure, or operate a relay. It is difficult to prove that software always works: think about the problems you get with your PC. I have to prove that the software has been well designed and tested so that it is safe to use in systems that must be safe.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently assessing some computer-based devices for a customer.

What or who inspired you to become an engineer?

My brother used to 'electrocute' me and my friends when we young. Not enough to hurt us of course but it was very dramatic!

Also I loved helping my Dad repair the car and I loved finding out about how things worked.

What excites you about Scottish engineering?

Scottish engineering is very varied. You can find a job in any area that interested you, be it medical equipment or ships! Scotland is small enough too so that you often meet engineers you already know when you start a new job or project. It is good working with people you know.

Where do you see developments in your field in the future?

Many devices that used be pure electronics are now being replaced with computer-based versions. Software engineering is already changing to make it more reliable, for example barking and engine management systems in car carry out important safety tasks and are very safe now.

It will be interesting being involved in making software safer and making it easier to prove that it is safer.
