Job Title: Design Engineer
Describe what you do.
I am an office-based consultant engineer working on projects both in the UK and abroad. I produce calculations and drawings for building structures, manage other project disciplines like Environmental and Civils, attend meetings with the Design Team and visit construction sites.
What are you currently working on?
I have just finished Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, the world's largest indoor theme park. I am now working on a new £40m secondary school in Coatbridge for North Lanarkshire Council and a new £7m hotel in Edinburgh city centre.
What or who inspired you to become an engineer?
The ability to change the geography of somewhere for better is my main inspiration: improving facilities for the betterment of people and being able to produce iconic buildings throughout the world.
What excites you about Scottish engineering?
How projects in Scotland interact with the local natural heritage and landscapes whether it is a city centre project or rural project. Also the use of local materials and expertise. Finally the numerous iconic structures we have in this country, like the Scottish Parliament and the Forth Bridge.
Where do you see developments in your field in the future?
Sustainability and environmental issues will become more important in the years to come, with carbon neutral buildings already a reality. Expanding markets internationally as countries become more accessible.
