Organisation: Raytheon Systems Limited, Glenrothes
Job title: Senior Electronics Engineer
Describe what you do.
I am an Electronic Engineer principally working in the area of test equipment design, commissioning and support. Although somewhat of a niche area, it has enabled me to work across various disciplines (for example both circuit design and software development) which has helped ensure my work is still varied and stimulating after 30 years.
What are you currently working on?
Test systems for a variety of radar and other applications.
What or who inspired you to become an engineer?
I guess I'm like a techie version of all the contestants that describe how they've been singing since they were three - my Dad is a retired engineer and I always had a stimulating environment, which when combined with an inquisitive nature made it almost inevitable that I would be an engineer. Although I never really thought about much as a teenager, I knew I would end up 'doing something technical'.
What excites you about Scottish engineering?
I think there are still good opportunities in Scotland for prospective engineers, there is still a significant involvement in offshore engineering, but our small country also leads in key areas such as software and research.
Where do you see developments in your field in the future?
Our company is working on Silicon Carbide, a key new semiconductor technology right here in Scotland. Lots of other great projects are happening right now, and we need keen new engineers to take part and help create a greener, more efficient world.
