Timetabling for Curriculum for Excellence

As Curriculum for Excellence is fully implemented over the coming school sessions, demands will increase on the timetable.

There is a growing awareness among school leaders and curriculum managers that many schools operate a very 'traditional' and often largely inflexible school timetable, ie one that is underpinned by an existing curriculum, which doesn't fully cater for the individual learner’s needs. The challenges and changing nature of new curriculum, with its four capacities, six entitlements, seven principles of design and eight curriculum areas,  together with a growing appreciation of the way individual learners learn,  isn’t always reflected in either the existing curriculum planning nor through its timetabling in some schools.

The purpose of this seminar is to consider some of the so-called ‘mysteries’ of secondary school timetabling and examine some of the approaches being developed in schools across the country. It does not claim to be definitive but aims to investigate the building blocks of the timetable and provide a range of resources and ideas to assist those interested in the task of timetabling Curriculum for Excellence.
