Early learners at Aberlour Nursery embarked on an exploration of similarities and differences in Scottish and Chinese culture in order to help develop the children’s understanding of the wider world and Scotland's place in it.
Research on the value of using a Storyline approach to engage young learners was carried out after a continuing professional development session at Aberlour Nursery. It was found to be an ideal way to introduce the children to aspects of global citizenship.
This was followed by a meeting with the local authority early years officer, who had recently taken part in a Scottish Continuing International Professional Development study visit to China. She had knowledge and resources that could be shared to enhance the introduction of Chinese persona dolls and make a Storyline approach more authentic.
Together staff planned a cross-cutting approach to embedding global citizenship in the early years curriculum. This would be an exploration of similarities and differences in Scottish and Chinese culture in order to help develop the children’s understanding of the wider world and Scotland's place in it.
