The children had experienced an aspect of farming life. This was linked to working through an enterprising situation from identification of a product to selling and making a profit. They gained an understanding of how much things cost, how to budget appropriately and how to keep track of a bank account.
They used numeracy skills to calculate the cost of purchasing, transporting and maintaining a calf, explored different options and calculated what would give the greatest profit with minimum risk. The children could explain why it was important for farmers to have good numeracy skills. This project also enabled the children to appreciate enterprise that was occurring in their local community.
It was a brave project because you could get it wrong.
Our headteacher trusted us so that we could feel what business is really like.
It was a big responsibility.
