Relevant contexts for learning mathematics - background and aims

Two primary girls count out coloured tokens

Children using Maths Recovery approaches. These include daily practice of reciting number word sequences forwards and backwards; numeral activities; screened problem solving tasks prompting understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; and finger and special patterns to enhance understanding of the relationship between numbers.

MR Tracker is a constructive and active approach to teaching numeracy, which has been developed by teachers from East Lothian. The MR Tracker training is currently being developed by East Lothian Council.

Teachers plan for pupils to learn in contexts and to create real-life opportunities for learning in and through maths.

There are no set mathematics topics for particular stages, so mathematics can be linked to interdisciplinary studies. Teachers are currently piloting a recently produced framework, which is in the form of a skills ladder showing progression within the whole subject area of mathematics. Ongoing monitoring ensures full coverage of the three mathematics organisers:

  • Number, money and measure
  • Shape, position and movement
  • Information handling.
