In planning for the newly published curricular guidance, Dumbarton Academy introduced three thematic projects for S1 in session 2008/09. These projects sought to involve all departments in linking learning to incorporate the experiences and outcomes in different subject areas.
The One World project saw the S1 timetable suspended for a period of three days to introduce the topic and to engage the pupils in learning activities that would capture their interest and stimulate ideas. Learners then returned to timetabled lessons to continue working on the project.
Later in the term, they returned to a suspended timetable to bring all the ideas together and conclude the project.
While it was primarily a citizenship-based theme, the RME experiences and outcomes were delivered in conjunction with those in other curricular areas. Through the use of the Learning for Life project, the RME department showed how the development of beliefs and values could be taught with links across subjects.
The project aimed to:
Through delivery of elements related to the Holocaust, an understanding of Jewish culture and belief was added, thus satisfying outcomes in World Religions selected for study.
Religious and moral education includes learning about Christianity, Islam and other world religions, and supports the development of beliefs and values.
