Literacy across learning: Strategy into practice in Beeslack Community High School

Practitioners at Beeslack Community High School in Penicuik wanted to raise the profile of literacy among their learners and staff, in all curricular areas, by building on work already carried out over the past few years.

The school management team and the Literacy Committee took a strategic approach by bringing together the expertise of staff from all departments, along with the librarian. Having audited coverage of the literacy experiences and outcomes, they devised ways in which to support learners in developing their literacy skills, while also supporting staff in their understanding of what they could contribute towards a consistent approach to literacy.

As a result, an inspection noted, as a particular strength of the school, the ‘innovative approaches to developing literacy and numeracy across the curriculum’ (April 2010).

It will be helpful if you first look at the video on the planning page before selecting any of the other short films as it explains the 'TAP' and 'COOL' approaches which are often referred to.
