Involving learners in their learning

Investigating heat

This workshop was led by Brian Redman, who is the South of Scotland Teacher Network Co-ordinator for the Institute of Physics and Principal Teacher of Science at Selkirk High School.

Brian believes in the importance of allowing learners to explore and try out their ideas during hands-on practical investigation. He believes that in this way the teacher is able to help nudge learners towards correct models.

Key points

  • The workshop aimed to give teachers ideas on how they could use thermo colour paper in investigations relating to heat.

  • During the workshop participants were able to try out a range of hands-on investigations and consider how they might use them in class to help learners construct new understandings.
