Primary 4 pupils at Dollar Academy, Clackmannanshire recently undertook a project aimed at improving their understanding of healthy eating. An interdisciplinary approach to learning was employed by the teacher, bringing together experiences and outcomes from both the technologies and health and wellbeing curricular areas.

The aim of the project was to develop the knowledge and understanding of healthy eating through a food-based design challenge with pupils working in teams to research, design and make a healthy food product.
Pupils gained a factually accurate understanding of healthy eating and experience of working within a cooking environment by utilising many resources from within the school and the community. The internet was used throughout the project as a means of researching information, developing knowledge and reinforcing learning.
There was a strong emphasis on collaborative working and active learning during the project with many opportunities being planned into the activities to remove the pupils from their classroom environment.
