Developing learning frameworks to meet pupils' needs

Cover of Testing the Framework Self-Help Group Report

The purpose of the document is to provide a fully fleshed-out analysis of how five different schools have worked towards developing a learning framework to meet the needs of their communities, through consultation with pupils, parents and staff.

These discussions have helped the schools to formulate their own philosophy and ethos. Each school’s philosophy has then been developed into a curriculum design and the associated timetabling, course choice and staffing issues associated with the implementation of Building the Curriculum 3 are addressed in each school’s case study.

A systematic approach has been taken to identify schools whose S1 intake cohort ranges from 120 to 300 pupils, providing a reference point for almost all Scottish secondary schools. In addition to identifying schools of different sizes, an effort has been made to choose schools of different natures serving differing types of community, so that the reader can not only consider the model relevant to the size of their school but also approaches adopted by schools of differing natures and clienteles.
