Staying on rates affect the potential of a year group to gain awards in S5; therefore a low staying on rate may be part of the explanation for a low percentage of awards at this stage.

Symbols used:

Footnotes
** Counts and percentages for year groups which contain more than 0 but less than 5 pupils are replaced by asterisks (**) because they could be misleading or lead to identification of individuals.
## The symbol (##) has been inserted instead of figures for some schools and categories. This indicates that the data are not available or comparable with other years. Possible reasons for this include:
  • Figures are pending agreement on accuracy
  • The school has recently opened or merged with another school.
  • S5 and S6 results for S1-S4 schools
  • S4, S5 and S6 results for S1-S2 schools
  • The school is temporarily closed
- The symbol (-) has been inserted instead of figures for some schools and categories. This indicates that the relevant year group roll figure is zero.
$$ The symbol ($$) indicates that the school has chosen to omit this information as the figures may be misleading due to the fact that the school makes presentations for non Scottish examinations and/or receives pupils in to S5 and S6.

In order to present a more accurate picture of attainment by an entire cohort, attainment in S5 and S6 is reported as a percentage of the relevant S4 roll. For example, attainment by the end of S5 in 2012/13 is calculated as a percentage of the S4 roll in 2011/12. S6 attainment is calculated from the S4 roll in 2010/11.

National averages have been calculated from the figures for all available local authority and grant-aided schools, whereas the local authority averages are based on local authority schools only.
