Auld Cruivie

The story of Auld Cruivie, also known as Jack and the Dancing Trees, was a favourite tale of renowned traveller storyteller Stanley Robertson.

Stanley was kind enough to tell Auld Cruivie for the Learning and Teaching Scotland's stories resource.

Auld Cruivie is a 'Jack' tale.

You might know Jack from famous stories and Christmas pantomimes like Jack the Giant Slayer and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Jack is a simple lad but whether he’s beating the devil or finding a hidden fortune, Jack’s simple ways always win out in the end.

Auld Cruivie is a magical tale of Jack, the greedy laird that he serves, a secret treasure and ancient trees that pull themselves up out of the earth to dance on Midsummer’s Night.
