Kingsland Primary School sent in the following details of its Homecoming activities...

The children of Kingsland Primary have been involved in various exciting activities to celebrate Burns’s 250th anniversary.

The nursery class performed a re-enactment of the story of Tam O’Shanter to the rest of the school. The traditional Scottish drink ‘Irn Bru’ provided the required bubbles for Tam to perform well!

The children from Primary 1 to 7 carried out art activities to create a frieze of the story of Tam O’Shanter. This was displayed along with other class work relating to Burns in the Scottish Art Gallery which was open to parents during the parents’ evenings.

The children’s work was also viewed by members of the Peebles Burns Club who were extremely impressed by the high quality of work on display.

The whole school was invited to participate in a Design a Tartan competition.  Various media were used to create an assortment of tartans with some adding their own Scottish character to adorn their kilts.

Each stage in the school researched an aspect of the life of Robert Burns. They produced written/art work to share their findings with the rest of the school. Examples, farming in the time of Burns, animals featured in Burn’s work, travel in the time of Burns linked to places of importance in his life.

All children in the school were encouraged to learn and recite a Burns or Scottish poem or song. Children confidently performed to the whole school during a fun-packed Scottish afternoon.

A successful Burns lunch was held on Friday 23rd January, a first for Kingsland School, which was attended by members of the local community and representatives from Scottish Borders Council. The event was fully supported by kitchen staff. One of their talented P7 pupils ably piped in the haggis ready for its address.

On Friday 30th January the nursery class had a Scottish Tasting session with haggis pies donated by the local butcher.  The children enjoyed the chance to taste a variety of Scottish foods. They also enjoyed participating in Scottish Country Dancing and their learning of the poem To a Mouse.

The children and staff of Kingsland Primary wholeheartedly engaged in the two week programme of study designed to increase their awareness of the work of Robert Burns. The outcomes of the study were reflected in the overall work and response to the activities by confident individuals who have achieved success in their learning.
