Homecoming Scotland 2009 provided schools with many opportunities to develop aspects of Curriculum for Excellence in curriculum areas such as expressive arts and social studies, as well as to support the underlying principles, capacities and values.
Learning and Teaching Scotland supported EventScotland and developed a range of Homecoming initiatives, including the LTS Homecoming education website which featured:
- information about Homecoming Scotland 2009 themes and events
- free online learning and teaching resources
- information on school events and activities
- learning opportunities across Scotland
- Homecoming Glow Groups
- the international dimension – school linking and study visits.
The international dimension
Scots have travelled the world, settling everywhere from America and Australia to Nova Scotia and New Zealand, influencing life in these and many other countries. Scotland’s Celtic connections offer schools the chance to link up through shared traditions of music, song and story.
The Education Scotland Homecoming website also provided details of international study visit opportunities for teachers, school linking and eTwinning.

Dougie MacLean’s classic song ‘Caledonia’ is a familiar and well loved anthem for many Scots not just in Scotland but all round the world.
The ad was shown in Scotland, and reached millions of potential Homecoming visitors when it was shown in England, Northern Ireland and the USA and Canada.
