Born in Glasgow of a Caithness family, Archibald Kay (1860-1935) studied at Glasgow School of Art and also in Paris. On his return home he spent 18 years teaching art in various schools in the city. However, despite being city-based Kay was almost exclusively a landscape painter, and he worked most frequently in the Western Highlands, Arran and Iona.
