St Joseph's Primary School

St Joseph’s Primary School is situated in a small town in West Lothian. It is a school of 180 pupils with 24 P7 pupils. There is a cohort of parents who are very involved in the school and a number the school wishes to engage further. It is part of the School Improvement Plan to look into ways to develop positive relationships with parents.

Currently, the learners are responsible for keeping a daily learning journal, detailing how they feel about the learning experiences each day, and linking with the four Curriculum for Excellence capacities. They also detail their achievements and set targets weekly within their homework diaries. It was noticed while discussing profiles and profiling that although the learners are profiling, there is no final document, ie a profile. It was felt this could be an approach that would increase the positive interactions the school has with its parents.

In keeping with the school’s inclusive ethos, pupils refer to personal achievements and awards within the context of their learning and comment on the skills they have developed. The profiles show that children are beginning to demonstrate reflection on their learning.

Current guidelines for profiles require robust information on the learner’s stage of achievement and progress and the inclusion of levels would provide such information.
