Notice the tenor saxophone solo. Now listen to a swing band version of a blues, this with accompanying strings, along with the customary brass, saxophones and rhythm sections
Now listen to a final example played by a Dixieland jazz band, playing in the original style of jazz from New Orleans. Notice the instruments used, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, piano, guitar, double bass and drum kit, and that the singer mentions his home town, New Orleans.
Listen in particular to the counter melody, played by a clarinet as the singer performs the song.

Scott Joplin

Ragtime

A style of dance music which became popular at the end of the 19th century and which helped to influence jazz. Usually for piano solo in which the left hand plays a vamp while the right hand plays a syncopated melody. Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was the most famous composer of ragtime music.    Notice the use of arpeggios in this example, the ‘Maple Leaf Rag’, and the use of syncopation, where a note is held over the beat of the music. Now listen to another example where this style is now played by a Dixieland band. Listen for the snare drum rolls in this excerpt.

Glenn Miller

Notice that the melody is played by saxophones, is in 4/4 time, is in a major key, and is based on arpeggios, ie broken chords. Now listen to another example in which you can again clearly hear the sections of the band. This is a more modern swing arrangement of a Beatles song, 'I wanna be your man'.

Tchaikovsky

Romantic

Although this is a term used to describe the music written from about 1810 to 1900, the style of romantic composition continued into the 20th century. Romantic composers aimed to express more emotion in their music and looked for a greater freedom in form and design. Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Tchaikovsky are all popular romantic composers. In the 20th century this tradition continued alongside all the other developments in music, some of which are in the instrumental section. Listen to the start of a concerto for piano written by Rachmaninov at the start of the 20th century. Listen to the dramatic beginning in the minor key, with the piano playing arpeggios while the lower strings play a rich romantic melody in a very legato way.

Opera

Opera also continued into the 20th century and operas are still being written today in the 21st century.
A drama set to music, performed on a stage in a theatre, with solo singers, chorus, orchestra in a pit and scenery. Usually there is no spoken dialogue and all the singers have trained voices. Here is a short excerpt from 'The Pilgrim's Progress' by the English composer Vaughan Williams that will give the listener the effect of the more continuous narrative of opera in the 20th century.

Improvisation

The performer creates music during the actual performance. Improvisation is an important part of jazz and popular music. Listen to an example in this performance of 'C Jam Blues' played on piano. The melody, based on only two notes, is introduced and then followed by a series of improvisations while the original shape can often be sensed in the background. Also listen to particular sections, one near the beginning where the melody is replaced by chords (see below) while the double bass plays a walking bass, and another section, towards the end, in the style of boogie woogie, a style of music which is important for Intermediate 2, and just at the end, the use of descending blues scales.

Syncopation

When a weak part of the bar is accented by placing a rest on the strong beat or by tying a note to obscure the strong beat. The best examples of this are from ragtime. Listen to another excerpt in that style.

Listen carefully to the clear syncopation in the melody, the arpeggios in the melody, the repeated chords which alternate with a vamp in the accompaniment and the elasticity in the speed of the music, which is called rubato - a concept for Intermediate 2.

Samba

A very lively syncopated dance with two beats in a bar in which a set of percussion instruments provides the foundation to the sound, which originated in Brazil. Listen to an example.
