Although this is a term used to describe the music written from about 1810 to 1900, the style of romantic composition continued into the 20th century. Romantic composers aimed to express more emotion in their music and looked for a greater freedom in form and design. Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Tchaikovsky are all popular romantic composers. In the 20th century this tradition continued alongside all the other developments in music, some of which are in the instrumental section. Listen to the start of a concerto for piano written by Rachmaninov at the start of the 20th century. Listen to the dramatic beginning in the minor key, with the piano playing arpeggios while the lower strings play a rich romantic melody in a very legato way.
Opera also continued into the 20th century and operas are still being written today in the 21st century.

A drama set to music which is performed on a stage with solo singers, chorus,orchestra/band in a pit or on stage, and scenery. It usually relies on a string of catchy tunes for its success. There is spoken dialogue in many, but not all, musicals. The singers’ voices are usually lighter than those used in opera. Well known musicals are ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Oliver’, ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’. Listen to an example.

The performer creates music during the actual performance. Improvisation is an important part of jazz and popular music. Listen to an example in this performance of 'C Jam Blues' played on piano. The melody, based on only two notes, is introduced and then followed by a series of improvisations while the original shape can often be sensed in the background. Also listen to particular sections, one near the beginning where the melody is replaced by chords (see below) while the double bass plays a walking bass, and another section, towards the end, in the style of boogie woogie, a style of music which is important for Intermediate 2, and just at the end, the use of descending blues scales.
