Our project is an integral part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms programme, developing an international partnership with schools in Delhi. It will involve pupils from Primary 4 to S6 and will have an interdisciplinary approach across a range of curriculum areas including PE, social studies, art, English, maths and technologies.
Literacy and expressive arts skills are developed through writing exercises, drawing and creating visual representations of stories, researching the home area and Scottish landmarks and visiting these landmarks - Whitelee Wind Farm, Arbroath Abbey, Scottish Parliament, and Stirling Castle - as well as producing leaflets to inform pupils in New Delhi about life as a child in East Renfrewshire.
A mini Highland Games celebrated traditional Scottish sporting activities and marked the handover of the Commonwealth Games from Delhi to Glasgow.
The initiative will develop pupils' cultural awareness and understanding. In line with the design principles of Curriculum for Excellence it offers choice, depth and real-life experiences and develops skills in a meaningful and purposeful context. It is an example of cross-cluster working in which all pupils and adults involved will benefit from sharing ideas and methodologies.
The Connecting Classrooms programme runs for three years until March 2012 but we anticipate that our partnership with the Indian schools can be sustained indefinitely as we are already building very positive and meaningful links.
We have eight partner schools through Connecting Classrooms:
