National Assessment Resource assessment materials

NAR provides:

  • Quality marked and quality assured examples of a wide range of assessment approaches and evidence - initially relating to experiences and outcomes in literacy, numeracy and aspects of health and wellbeing, across curriculum areas and stages, and within levels

  • Literacy and numeracy materials developed by SQA.

Assessment exemplars

The exemplars are intended to support practitioners in developing their understanding of, and improving their practice in, approaches to assessment.

Educational establishments have shared their experiences, materials and exemplification, with illustrations of performance and learners' work.

All exemplars have gone through a process of national quality assurance and each exemplar illustrates the assessment of learners' progress and achievement within one of the responsibility of all areas - literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing across learning - and one of the eight curriculum areas. Practitioners are therefore able to find exemplars for the area they are most interested in, or look for ideas that suit the level or stage most appropriate to their setting.

Each of these could be adapted to suit different needs or situations.

Practitioners may find it helpful to follow the review, reflect and respond sequence:

Assessment tasks

The assessment tasks support literacy and numeracy in the context of Curriculum for Excellence.

The literacy materials support the assessment of reading. They consist of short texts with an associated set of questions, or with a creative task for pupils to carry out. These questions and tasks can be adapted as practitioners see fit, given pupils' particular circumstances.

The numeracy materials consist of individual questions with answers, searchable by organiser and level. This gives practitioners the flexibility to collate the questions into customised packages to use in the classroom.

A guide for educators is available:
