The Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy (SSLN) is a national sample-based survey which monitors performance in literacy and numeracy in alternate years at P4, P7 and S2. Information from the survey is also used to inform improvements in learning, teaching and assessment within the classroom. The SSLN has been developed by a partnership of Scottish Government, Education Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications Authority. It has been aligned with Curriculum for Excellence and will include written and practical assessments.
The first numeracy survey took place in all schools in May 2011 with the report on the findings being published in spring 2012. Information to inform improvements in learning and teaching practice will be made available following publication of the main report. The first literacy survey will take place in all schools in May 2012 with the report on the findings being published in spring 2013.

Education Scotland has responsibility for developing criteria for assessing literacy and numeracy at first, second and third level for the survey.
Education Scotland will also produce learning and teaching points for schools from information provided by the SSLN survey findings. This information will be made available to teachers, schools and authorities to support and inform learning and teaching practice in the classroom. It is intended that this information will be available in autumn 2012.
