'Building the Curriculum 1' (2006) focuses on the curriculum areas, each of which makes its own contribution to developing the four capacities of children and young people.

It explains that each curriculum area makes its own unique contribution to developing the four capacities of children and young people, both within its own disciplinary contexts and through connections with other areas of learning.

'Building the Curriculum 1' draws on classroom practice to describe some of these contributions and possible connections.

Developing professional practice

'Building the Curriculum 1 - the contribution of curriculum areas' was concerned with the overall structure of the new curriculum, particularly during the broad general education phase up to the end of S3. 

This short guide, developed from the original publication, encourages practitioners to reflect on and develop their professional practice regarding the contribution of the different curriculum areas towards developing the four capacities.

The focus is on the distinctive contribution of each of the eight curriculum areas plus their contribution to interdisciplinary learning and ability to illustrate wider themes.

The guide, plus its companion 'Building the Curriculum 2 - active learning', builds on the summary versions of 'Building the Curriculum 3' and 'Building the Curriculum 5' published in June 2010 to support teachers and other practitioners in reviewing and developing their professional practice in line with Curriculum for Excellence by presenting the advice in a brief and accessible form.
