About Early Years

Research informs us that during our earliest years and even pre-birth, a large part of the pattern for our future adult life is set; therefore we acknowledge that positive early years experiences give children the best start in life.

Education Scotland, through its work and the work of the online service, aims to ensure that teachers and early years practitioners are offered a range of continuous professional development opportunities to ensure that all children have the best start in life.

The skills, knowledge, attitudes and qualifications of the workforce are a key focus in improving quality, and the mix of those skills is also critical. We want the best people working in early years where they can have the biggest impact on outcomes

The Early Years Framework, Scottish Government and COSLA (2008:22)

The Early Years area of the Education Scotland online service specifically aims to support quality early years provision by providing examples from practice, points for reflection, and information to support and stimulate those involved in the care and education of Scotland’s youngest children.

On this website, you will find a range of informative case studies, downloadable illustrations, relevant publications, research information and other resources to support the reflective practitioner that promote the philosophy of the revised Pre-Birth to Three Guidance and Curriculum for Excellence.

Education Scotland believes each child is unique and the learning process is complex. Learning, to be effective, needs to build on what the learner already knows and an understanding of the ways in which children learn.
