What is community learning and development?

Working and learning together to build stronger communities (WALT) (2004) defines community learning and development as:

... a way of working with and supporting communities ... to increase the skills, confidence, networks and resources they need to tackle problems and grasp opportunities.

This video provides an introduction to community learning and development.

Community learning and development (CLD) is:

  • a distinct sector of education alongside schooling and further and higher education
  • a discipline using a distinct set of competences that can be utilised by staff in a range of settings across the public and third sectors
  • an area of activity undertaken in a wide range of settings that promotes the three national priorities for community learning and development.
